After Hours

At 2:13 every morning, Sift opens the lower gate. Rumor arrives first, polished and loud. Useful things travel slowly: one clean fact, a spare key, the name of the person who actually checked. By sunrise, the good pile is small enough to carry. Sift locks the rest downstairs and clocks out without explaining the criteria.
